Healthcare CIO Profiles
What is a healthcare CIO?
Chief information officers (CIOs) at healthcare organizations have seen a radical change in job responsibilities over the last 20 years. As organizations put increasing emphasis on automating clinical processes, CIOs no longer are responsible only for hardware and infrastructure installations. They now regularly interact with clinicians and medical executives at their organizations, physicians in their communities, and caregiving professionals. As the effort grows to ensure that all Americans have electronic health records, their responsibilities will only grow in this area.
CIOs also interact with a variety of departments in their organizations, ranging from finance, medical records, laboratory and diagnostics. As their responsibilities have grown, many CIOs sit on executive boards, interacting with top officials in their organizations to make key strategic decisions.
To personalize the role of CIOs in their healthcare organizations, CHIME has developed the following pieces detailing the day-to-day responsibilities of typical CIOs.
